Who needs it? Consider the observations by the CEO of Graybar, which begin on page
7. Synchronized data can mean significant cost savings on error reduction alone. He estimates that between 7-28% of the electrical
industry's purchase orders have errors. He also estimates that it costs about $150 per order to correct those errors. You
do the math for your bottom line.
Since day one there has been a chicken-and-egg syndrome with data synchronization.
Manufacturers don't want to invest in the time-consuming and costly process if there aren't many distributors using it. Distributors
won't use it if it isn't timely and widespread.
As the article points out, it's all about commitment. Manufacturers have
to take control of their data. Distributors have to commit to using the updated data. The winners are going to be those who
make it easiest and most cost-effective for the customer to do business with.
Customers are cutting through the hype of
the past few years and getting down to the hard and sometimes excruciating work of cleaning their internal data. They are
in turn asking their vendors of the future to do the same and connect. Need there be any more incentive?
