ITW files patent suit against Powers Fasteners

Illinois Tool Works Inc., Glenview, IL, has filed a lawsuit against Powers Fasteners Inc., New Rochelle, NY, for patent infringement on its TrakFast automatic fastening system. ITW claims that earlier this year, Powers Fasteners began to market Trak-It collated fasteners for use with ITW's TrakFast system. The lawsuit asserts that the Trak-It collated fasteners infringe ITW's ム340 patent.

The lawsuit was filed on Sept. 10, 2001 in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. ITW holds U.S. Patent No. 5,069,340 ('the ム340 patent'), which covers collated fasteners used in ITW's proprietary TrakFast automatic fastening system in the drywall track fastening market. The lawsuit was filed on Sept. 10, 2001 in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. ITW holds U.S. Patent No. 5,069,340 ('the ム340 patent'), which covers collated fasteners used in ITW's proprietary TrakFast automatic fastening system in the drywall track fastening market. Launched seven years ago, TrakFast is produced by ITW's Ramset/Red Head division located in Wood Dale, IL.
In its complaint, ITW is seeking an injunction permanently barring Powers Fasteners from continued infringement of the ム340 patent and unspecified monetary damages.

'ITW Ramset/Red Head has a long history of vigorously enforcing its hard-earned intellectual property rights and will continue to do so,' said Robert W. Sanders, vice president and general manager of Ramset/Red Head. 'In the case of TrakFast, ITW engineers spent nearly two decades perfecting a drywall track fastening system.'

ITW is a $10 billion diversified manufacturer of highly engineered components and industrial systems. The company consists of approximately 600 decentralized operations in 43 countries and employs 55,300 people.
