Airgas, Inc., Radnor, PA, reported that its Airgas Mid South facility in Tulsa, OK, is recovering from an explosion late in the afternoon on Aug. 19. There were no reported injuries from the accident, which was centered in the outdoor cylinder storage area of the site. Buildings on the site suffered only minor damage and the branch delivery vehicles were not affected. However, four nearby structures, approximately 64 vehicles of employees and others, and up to 5,000 cylinders were affected. The company has established claim procedures for those affected by the accident.

Airgas, Inc., Radnor, PA, reported that its Airgas Mid South facility in Tulsa, OK, is recovering from an explosion late in the afternoon on Aug. 19. There were no reported injuries from the accident, which was centered in the outdoor cylinder storage area of the site. Buildings on the site suffered only minor damage and the branch delivery vehicles were not affected. However, four nearby structures, approximately 64 vehicles of employees and others, and up to 5,000 cylinders were affected. The company has established claim procedures for those affected by the accident.


Airgas Mid South moved its IT operations to Oklahoma City and established extra phone lines for customers at its Broken Arrow, OK branch. Airgas was able to restore power to the fast-fill plant and resume filling operations the same afternoon. The Tulsa facility, one of nearly 200 fill plants nationwide in the Airgas network, fills 1,800 cylinders per day.


This week's accident followed last month's explosion in the Sacramento branch of Airgas Northern California & Nevada. In that incident, the branch resumed operation within 48 hours.


W.W. Grainger's daily sales rate for July (with 22 days) was down 2% versus July 2002 (22 days). Daily sales at Grainger's branch-based businesses were also down 2% versus July 2002. Daily sales for Integrated Supply were down 15% due to recent disengagements while daily sales at Lab Safety were up 5% including the recent acquisition. Daily sales processed through grainger.com were 14% above July 2002. The company expects sales for grainger.com of $450-550 million in 2003.


Motion Industries, Birmingham, AL, posted second quarter sales of $565.9 million for the period ending Jun. 30, 2003, down 1% compared to sales of $572.6 million for the same period last year. Sales for the first six months of 2003 were up 1% to $1,135.5 million as compared to net sales for the first six months of 2002 of $1,123.7 million.


June U.S. machine tool consumption totaled $244.55 million, according to the American Machine Tool Distributors' Association, and the Association For Manufacturing Technology. This total, as reported by companies participating in the USMTC program, was up 67.1% from May and up 3.3% from the total of $236.79 million reported for June 2002. With a year-to-date total of $952.86 million, 2003 is down 17.9% compared to the same period in 2002.
