The number of U.S. wholesale distribution companies shrank by 6 percent from 2002 to 2003, according to data by Industrial Market Information, Inc., Minneapolis, MN. The trend for industrial product supply companies was slightly steeper, with 7 percent fewer companies than last year. Employment in wholesale distribution tracked these numbers closely, with just over 6.7 million employed in distribution in 2003, down 7 percent from 7.25 million U.S. distribution employees in 2002.


The percentage drops track with MRO product consumption estimates published in the Aug. 25 MDM, which showed an 8.2 percent drop in the U.S. market for maintenance, repair and operating products. The U.S. market for the 128 MRO industrial product groups used in the analysis was estimated at $384 ...
