Channel has to compress

Not to discount in any manner the tragedy or intense struggle the airline industry has experienced in the past few months, but let's review a few numbers.


Statistics used in the Nov. 6 USA Today Money section cover story estimate that layoffs for the past four months in the U.S. airline industry reached 153,045. Layoffs for manufacturing in the past four months were at 168,287.


The impact, of course, is greatest on the people and families of those who lose jobs. But these statistics, compiled by JW Thompson, drive home what this industry has been experiencing the past year.
