The economy spells opportunity – not concern – for Grainger, according to Grainger U.S. President Mike Pulick, who spoke with me for the November episode of Executive Briefing. (He was featured in 7 Minutes With, where we interview executives of distribution companies. See the archives here.)

“We like to focus on things we can control,” Pulick said, “like providing great customer service, ways that we can help customers take costs out of their business.”
In fact, he said he believes the economy has helped provide a way to get MRO to be front and center with many of Grainger’s customers. “It’s causing them to pay more attention to it and has helped us engage in even more conversations on how Grainger can help them stretch a shrinking budget … so that they can do more with less.”
Pulick said he is more concerned with customers’ rapidly changing needs. “They’re faced with all different types of challenges and most recently, with the downturn and the sluggish economy, they’re really faced with challenges to take cost out of their business. … I want to make sure that we listen to the challenges that they have.”
