BlueLinx Holdings Inc. (NYSE:BXC), Atlanta, GA, distributor of building products, reported sales for the first quarter ended April 3, 2010, were $431.1 million, up 6 percent from the same period a year ago. Overall unit volume rose 1.4 percent.

BlueLinx had a net loss of $14.7 million for the first quarter, compared with a net loss of $60.7 million in the prior-year period.
Gross margins increased to 12.1 percent from the 10.9 percent generated in the year-earlier period. Wood-based pricing and an increase in sales through the warehouse channel contributed to the margin improvement.
While we achieved our first year-over-year quarterly increase in revenue in four years, our results were hindered by unusually severe weather conditions throughout the country," said BlueLinx President and CEO George Judd. "However, since the later part of the first quarter, we have seen an increase in demand for our products as the housing market appears to have begun its recovery."
