Emerging Trends in Talent Management: What's Real, What's Hype?

Thursday, October 18, 2007 at 2:00 pm Eastern -- 60 minutes

Are you struggling to hire and retain top-performing employees? Are you wondering where your next generation of leaders is coming from? Is the “war for talent” starting to take its toll on your effectiveness as an HR leader? According to surveys with top HR executives, 62% of respondents said that their #1 most pressing strategic issue is talent management. Surveys also show it’s easier said than done - only about a third of participants rated their organizations as good (30%) or excellent (5%) at managing talent.

The term “talent management” defines a dynamic new way of managing people that drives better performance and offers a range of benefits for your people, for your organization, and for YOU the HR professional. But be warned - what passes for talent management in some companies can be an overwhelming and haphazard mess of conflicting priorities and impossible-to-get-started projects.

It doesn’t have to be that way. Get it right and TM becomes an integrated set of processes that (finally!) establishes HR as a strategy-leading function that adds bottom-line value and, at the same time, makes your HR job easier. Talent Management thought leader Lynne Morton will show you how to build a coherent framework for attracting, retaining, and developing talent.

The bottom line is that talent management is powerful… and you need to know how to get it right in your organization. Participants in this program will learn:
  • What Talent Management (TM) is – and what it isn’t
  • Why Integrated Talent Management (ITM) is the only kind worth implementing (hint: because then TM “spreads” and becomes EVERY manager’s #1 job)
  • Why TM, based on frequent and honest manager-employee feedback, is more effective than “old school” annual performance reviews
  • How TM can serve as an HR risk management strategy, especially if you use it to identify critical positions – and your likelihood of keeping those positions filled
You will also learn:
  • How to use TM to define the difference between good and great performance
  • The who, what, where, when, and how of getting TM initiatives started
  • How to generate “quick wins” that fit well with your organization’s strategic initiatives
  • How to engage your line managers to “own” the TM process and become advocates for generating results
  • How to create the tools and processes for holding “talent conversations”
  • How TM can help you identify your workforce vulnerabilities in the face of retiring baby boomers, competing for Gen Y talent, and meeting employee work-life demands
  • What you need to do to connect Performance Management with your TM initiative
  • Why it’s important to structure ways for your CEO to be visibly involved in TM
