Performance Talk: How Bosses Can Get Extraordinary Results From Their People

Thursday, October 25th at 2:00 pm Eastern -- 60 minutes

Why do some average employees suddenly excel when they get a new boss? And why do some stars see results fall off when they start reporting to someone else? Because bosses REALLY matter. And what matters most in the boss/subordinate relationship is how they communicate … the words they use and the way they exchange ideas. The dialogue IS the relationship.

In this conference, our speaker will give supervisors a powerful question-based technique that will give them the confidence they need to engage employees in productive performance dialogue. Participants will learn to:

  • Confront performance problems head on Identify the root cause of obstacles that block top performance
  • Coach employees effectively when they need direction
  • Help employees prioritize and stay focused Inspire employees to be accountable for solving their own problems and achieving their goals.
  • Key topics covered include:
  • The #1 trait that truly effective leaders use to talk to employees successfully
  • The difference between “powerful” vs. “soft” questions
  • Why you must avoid using “Queggestions” – suggestions disguised as questions like “Have you tried…” and “Why don’t you…”
  • The right way to ask performance questions, clarity questions, and collaboration questions
  • The power of “What” and “How” questions The dangers of “Why” and “Who” questions
  • When during the conversation to use prompting and probing – and when they turn into “grilling”
  • How to use accountability questions and create “next actions” around performance issues
  • How to set the stage for productive performance-improvement conversations
  • How to smoothly shift your focus from asking questions to listening actively
  • How to respond when an employee’s answer “throws you”
