Construction Spending Up Slightly

Nonresidential construction declines, but residential construction starts to look up in September.

Construction spending in September 2009 was estimated at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $940.3 billion, 0.8% above August, and 13% below September 2008.
 
During the first nine months of this year, construction spending was $715.2 billion, 12.1% below the $813.3 billion for the same period in 2008.
 
Private Construction
Spending on private construction was at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $613.9 billion, 0.5% above the August. Residential construction was at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $256 billion in September, 3.9% above August. Nonresidential construction was at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $357.9 billion in September, 1.8% below August.
 
Public Construction
In September, the estimated seasonally adjusted annual rate of public construction spending was $326.4 billion, 1.3% above August. Educational construction was at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $88.7 billion, 0.1% below August. Highway construction was at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $85.5 billion, 1% above August.
