MDM NEWS UPDATE: August 23, 2007
It's been a busy summer for M&A in
industrial distribution channels. Most recently, power
transmission/motion control distributor DXP Enterprises Inc., Houston,
TX, announced it would acquire Precision Industries Inc., Omaha, NE, for
$106 million. The deal will nearly double the size of DXP and greatly
strengthen its integrated supply business. Precision has annualized 2007
sales of $250 million, with about half of that in integrated supply.
DXP's sales were $280 million in 2006. It's on pace to hit $340 million
this year. More...

A rose by any other name certainly
does smell as sweet, and the new Gexpro electrical distributor GE
Supply's new name after being acquired by Rexel Inc. in August 2006
is no different. The distributor's president and CEO recently
told Purchasing Magazine that there will be "no real change" in the
business or company's direction as it makes its transition.
Management considered more than 900 names before deciding on Gexpro.
The new name is supposed to represent "building on more than 100 years
of GE Supply excellence while reinforcing our commitment to core values
of professionalism, accountability, customer focus, experience and
integrity," he says. More...

This article from
Family Enterprise Planning suggests that as long as you plan, families
running businesses can hold productive meetings without an outside
advisor. The "do-it-yourself" strategy can be a great alternative to
families put off of meetings by the expense of outside facilitators.
What's more, multi-generational family meetings keeping everyone
abreast of company goings-on may improve the chances a business
will continue in the next generation. Involve everyone, regardless of
connection to the business; agenda items can include family mission
statements, philanthropic or community activities, business succession,
recognition, family policies, and so on.

With an extraordinary
number of product recalls from China in the news lately, Adam Fein of
Pembroke Consulting brought in a guest blogger to his Distribution
Trends blog. "One factor is expediency," he writes. "In greatly
simplified terms, the Chinese are pragmatic and are less concerned with
abstract principles and those principles include manufacturing
standards."
He also points out the Chinese express, cha bu duo jiu hao le,
which means "so-so is good enough." A broad argument, to be sure, but it
is important to understand a culture, as well as its industrial history,
when doing business there. More...

someone who saw a niche in the marketplace and jumped to fill it.
