BMHC Announces More Closures, Consolidations

By MDM Staff

Building Materials Holding Corp., San Francisco, CA, a provider of building materials and construction services to professional residential builders and contractors, announced it will close several additional facilities in an effort to continue to align costs with current market conditions.

BMHC will close all of its operations located in Northern Nevada, including Reno and Sparks facilities. Greater Portland, OR, market operations will be consolidated to the Vancouver, WA, facility, closing a site in Sherwood, OR. In Marysville, CA, BMHC will consolidate its lumber and building materials distribution and wall panel manufacturing operations into its existing Modesto, CA facilities. Other operational consolidations will occur in Texas, Colorado and Arizona.

These closures and consolidations are expected to be substantially completed during the first quarter of 2009. Approximately 260 employees are expected to be affected by these actions.

"The unprecedented national economic and local market challenges require that we continue to realign costs with current market conditions," said CEO Robert E. Mellor. "With the exception of the Reno area, where we will be exiting the market, we will continue to serve our customers with our full range of products and services through nearby facilities."

BMHC closed two California facilities in May of 2008, and announced in August it would discontinue operations of its wholly owned subsidiary SelectBuild Florida. The company reported a loss of $45.2 million for the third quarter of 2008.
