That increased product demand has created a different type of demand from customers as well: better searchability, Gershwind says. With over 600,000 SKUs available online, how do you make the process as pain free as possible?
The answer, in part, lies in the information attached to each of those individual SKUs. It has to be accurate, easy to use, and easy to read, Gershwind says. Data have to meet the needs of the customer while still being easily and effectively indexed by the search mechanism.
To meet that end, MSC recently rolled out an entirely new search engine that includes a cleaner interface than prior incarnations and a more streamlined results page.
"And it's an area where we're not done," Gershwind says. "We're going to continue to study customer online buying behavior and look to continually build upon what we've already launched."
