Across the board, spending was down in 2009, and spending on technology was no exception. According to Gartner, a technology-focused consulting firm, global spending on IT declined 4.6% in 2009.

That trend may be reversing, however. In fact, according to the latest forecast from Gartner, IT spending in 2010 is expected to reach $3.4 trillion, an increase of 4.6% over 2009 and comparable to spending levels in 2008 – a full year ahead of earlier projections.

While good news, Richard Gordon, research vice president at Gartner, cautions that some of the growth in tech spending will come from exchange rates rather than actual investment growth.

That said, in a recent Activant-MDM survey, respondents indicated that technology will play a significant role in improving profitability in 2010, with business intelligence and eCommerce noted as priorities for distributors and manufacturers.

Companies that have delayed replacement of equipment or put off system upgrades may be more apt to move forward as the recovery settles in. Or they simply may not be able to put them off any longer. But, according to the survey, more companies are making sure they understand the full capabilities of their current systems and software.
