This category, similar to our Jan-San category sector, poses unique challenges in our annual listings when it comes to defining the competitive landscape. The specialty distribution markets in both safety and Jan-San have been the primary targets not only for other distribution sectors to expand their wallet share in existing customers, but it has also been the most exposed to commoditization, which emerging digital disruptors, with Amazon Business at the font of line, have been able to exploit effectively.
In the history of industrial distribution channels, this will be regarded as the coal mine canary for a perfect storm of product category expansion strategy by stronger traditional core product category competitors, as well as their vulnerability to emerging digital disruptors able to compete more effectively on price. This sector was arguably more exposed to price competitiveness and displacement than any other, except perhaps Jan-San sectors. The Safety Equipment Distributors Association ended operations in 2011, due in part to the factors noted here as the sector consolidated.
Increasingly, the competitive picture in U.S. safety products distribution, as illustrated in this list, is one of larger price- and convenience-based entities, and smaller specialty distributors that have been effective in building value-added services that include safety training, specialized product knowledge and integrating into customer workflows as outsourced service providers.View 2018 Rankings

*Indicates 2018 annual revenue estimate not provided by the company, but by MDM research with best publicly available information. Some estimates remove other product category sales to more accurately reflect industrial/construction/MRO product sales, and may not be total annual corporate revenues.
Methodology Note: Unless otherwise noted, revenues reflect the 2018 fiscal year. Revenues for all companies in this report are in U.S. dollars. For companies who report their data in other currencies, we converted their revenues to U.S. dollars using the exchange rate in place on the last day of that company’s reported fiscal year to determine ranking.
