Tom is the CEO of Modern Distribution Management. Tom has owned Modern Distribution Management since 1993. For decades, Tom has researched and written on significant trends in independent distribution channels, including consolidation, integrated supply, e-commerce, vendor reduction and shifts in value definitions. He is the co-author of Stand Out from the Competition! Four Pathways to Differentiate Your Wholesale Distribution Company and contributed to Outlook 2009: An Executive’s Companion to Facing the Forces of Change, both from the National Association of Wholesaler-Distributors. He is a popular speaker on topics affecting independent distribution channels. Tom is also the Principal for Gale Media Inc., which publishes MDM and MDM Analytics ( Tom is originally from St. Louis, MO.

Ian HellerIan Heller, President

Ian Heller is the co-owner, President & COO of Modern Distribution Management and its parent company, Gale Media, the most trusted resource for market intelligence and industry insight to wholesale distribution executives and industrial product marketers since 1967. He began his distribution career as a truck unloader in a Grainger branch in college. He left that company 15 years later as Marketing Vice President and has held senior executive positions in marketing and eCommerce at GE Capital Rail, Newark Electronics, Corporate Express and most recently as VP Marketing for HD Supply White Cap. Ian also founded and ran Real Results Marketing, a distribution-focused consultancy, for seven years.

John GundersonJohn Gunderson, VP, Analytics & E-Business

John has held senior distribution leadership roles in analytics, marketing, e-business, category management, pricing and sales over a 20-year career across multiple distribution product sectors. He was previously Vice President of Marketing for EIS, an $800-million electrical and electronics distribution subsidiary of Genuine Parts Company.

In addition to EIS, Gunderson has led marketing teams for Anixter (formerly HD Supply Power Solutions), HD Supply Construction & Industrial – White Cap, and Crescent Electric Supply Company. He started his career as a "distribution runner" picking up supplies for a general contractor.

Austin Garrison, Director of Industry Research

Austin Garrison, MDM’s Director of Industry Research is the founder and Managing Partner of Concourse Capital, a Manhattan, CA based private equity firm. Concourse is a research-based investment firm focusing on middle market private companies. Garrison is an accredited Chartered Financial Analyst and consults on projects requiring intensive analytical and research capabilities. Garrison holds an MBA from the University of California, Berkeley, and an B.S. in Engineering from Colorado State University.
