Copper and brass distributors are cautiously optimistic, with some bookings increases reported for November and December, according to the Copper & Brass Servicenter Association. But shipments year-to-date through November 2001 were down nearly 25% from the previous year. The association reports that most members interviewed feel the real pick-up won't come until the second quarter at the earliest, and possibly not until the second half of the year.
Rockwell Automation, Milwaukee, WI, has expanded its machine safety product and R&D capabilities by acquiring Tesch GmbH, Wuppertal, Germany, an electronic products and safety relay manufacturer. Tesch will be aligned with Rockwell Automation's UK-based EJA Ltd., a manufacturer of Guardmaster safety products. This acquisition provides Rockwell Automation enhanced technical expertise for ongoing safety activities and to set new standards for machine safety products. Tesch currently employs 60 people and occupies two facilities in the Wuppertal area. Rockwell Automation sees no management or location changes as a result of the acquisition.

'The availability and credibility of the company's advanced safety relays, dedicated function monitoring relays, and other product technologies complement our safety growth initiatives and expand our current industrial component product offerings.'
One month after its last E-business announcement, The Timken Company, Canton, OH, has announced the Canadian version of the Timken Store at PTplace.com. The addition of Canadian dollars capability to the U.S. English and U.S. dollars functionality provides the best possible service and efficiency for all authorized Canadian Timken distributors. 'The Timken Store at PTplace.com now allows Canadian distributors to conduct business with the U.S. in a very efficient manner, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week,' said Dan Muller, vice president - distribution management - The Timken Company.
In January 2001, The Timken Company announced the agreement to join INA Holding Schaeffler KG, Rockwell Automation and The SKF Group to create a premium brand alliance to provide Web-based services and integrated logistics for its industrial bearings and related products. In May, the company announced the launch of the Timken Store on PTplace.com, serving authorized Timken distributors in the U.S. In October, the company's E-business scope expanded to Western Europe with the launch of Timken-branded products and services on Endorsia.com. Last month, Timken launched Trading-Block, an online inventory management tool enabling all Timken authorized U.S. industrial bearing distributors to buy and sell Timken bearings.

Former W.W. Grainger exec Don Bielinski was named president and CEO of Exostar, Herndon, VA, an independent online exchange for the aerospace and defense industry. A 29-year veteran of Grainger, Bielinski held several positions including CFO. Since 1995, Bielinski had overseen Grainger's Internet-related initiatives and guided its digital strategy. Grainger in the past year cut back substantially on digital efforts to support its core mission, its branch-based business.
