August 2004 sales of merchant wholesalers, after adjustment for seasonal variations and trading-day differences but not for price changes, were $275.8 billion, up 1.2 percent from the revised July level, and were up 15.0 percent from the August 2003 level. The July preliminary estimate was revised upward $0.9 billion or 0.3 percent. August sales of durable goods increased 1.1 percent from last month, and were up 19.8 percent from a year ago. Compared to last month, sales of metals and minerals, except petroleum were up 4.1 percent and sales of lumber and other construction materials were up 3.9 percent.
