European Construction Production Down in March

Compared with February 2014, March 2014 seasonally adjusted production in the construction sector fell by 0.6 percent in the euro area (EA18) and by 0.5 percent in the EU28, according to Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union. In February, production in construction rose by 0.4 percent and 0.5 percent respectively.

Year-over-year, March production in construction increased by 5.2 percent in the euro area and by 5.3 percent in the EU28.

Compared with February, March production in construction had the highest decreases observed in Portugal (down 3 percent), the Netherlands (down 2.6 percent) and Germany (down 2.2 percent), and the highest increases in Romania (up 10.3 percent), Slovenia (up 8.9 percent) and Italy (up 1.9 percent).

The decrease of 0.6 percent in the euro area is due to building construction falling by 0.7 percent and civil engineering by 0.6 percent. In the EU28, the decrease of 0.5 percent is due to building construction falling by 0.6 percent and civil engineering by 0.3 percent.

Compared with March 2013, March 2014 production in construction had the largest increases registered in Slovenia (up 44.9 percent), Hungary (up 34.1 percent), Spain (up 19.1 percent) and Poland (up 18.4 percent), and the largest decreases in Portugal (down 13.8 percent), Sweden (down 2.8 percent) and Italy (down 1.4 percent).

The increase of 5.2 percent in the euro area is due to building construction rising by 5 percent and civil engineering by 6.3 percent. In the EU28, the increase of 5.3 percent is due to building construction rising by 5.4 percent and civil engineering by 4.3 percent.
