European Construction Production Up in April

Compared with March 2014, April 2014 seasonally adjusted production in the construction sector grew by 0.8 percent in the euro area (EA18) and by 0.6 percent in the EU28, according to Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union. In March, production in construction fell by 0.3 percent and 0.2 percent respectively.

Year-over-year, April production in construction increased by 8 percent in the euro area and by 7.2 percent in the EU28.

Compared with March, April production in construction had the highest increases observed in Slovenia (up 6.7 percent), Spain (up 4.8 percent) and Portugal (up 4.5 percent), and the largest decreases in Poland (down 5.4 percent), Romania (down 4.7 percent) and Slovakia (down 2 percent).

The increase of 0.8 percent in production in construction in the euro areais due to building construction rising by 1 percent, while civil engineering fell by 0.9 percent. In the EU28,the increase of 0.6 percent is due to building construction rising by 0.9 percent, while civil engineering dropped by 0.8 percent.

Compared with April 2013, April 2014 production in construction had the highest increases registered in Spain (up 53.4 percent), Slovenia (up 48.8 percent), Hungary (up 27.2 percent) and Poland (up 13.3 percent), and the largest decreases in Portugal (down 9 percent), Romania (down 6.8 percent), Slovakia (down 5.1 percent) and Italy (down 5 percent).

The increase of 8 percent in production in construction in the euro areais due to building construction rising by 9.4 percent and civil engineering by 2.8 percent. In the EU28, the increase of 7.2 percent is due to building construction rising by 8.6 percent and civil engineering by 1.7 percent.
