The big news for MSC Industrial Supply (NYSE: MSM) in the past year was the acquisition of Barnes Group’s North American distribution business, which had unaudited sales of $300 million in 2012. Barnes Distribution is still listed separately in the top 40 industrial distributors list because it reflects the top 40 in 2012.
The acquisition of Barnes Distribution in North America expands MSC’s reach in Canada; adds to its plans to build out its vendor managed inventory and vending capabilities; and supplements MSC’s product categories. The addition of Barnes’ sales team will extend MSC’s reach into almost every ZIP code in the U.S., according to President and CEO Erik Gershwind. MSC has also built out its online presence, accounting for 40 percent of total sales in the most recent quarter. MSC is aiming to hit $4 billion in sales by 2016.
The distributor plans to continue adding to its product portfolio, primarily through its e-commerce, telesales and catalog channels. In fiscal 2012, MSC added about 37,500 new SKUs to its ordering database, bringing its saleable SKU count to 935,000. Most of those were launched through mscdirect.com, where more than 600,000 SKUs are available to order.
