European Construction Production Increases in December

December construction production in euro area, EU28 increases 1%.

Compared with November 2013, December 2013 seasonally adjusted production in the construction sector grew by 0.9 percent in the euro area (EA17) and by 1 percent in the EU28, according to Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union. In November 2013, production in construction fell by 0.2 percent and 0.8 percent respectively.

Year-over-year, December production in construction declined by 0.2 percent in the euro area, but rose 0.8 percent in the EU28.

Compared with November 2013, among the member states for which data is available for December 2013, production in construction rose in nine and fell in six. The highest increases were observed in the Czech Republic (up 6 percent), France (up 4.5 percent) and Slovakia (up 2.9 percent), and the largest decreases were observed in Slovenia (down 17.2 percent), Poland (down 4.1 percent) and Spain (down 3.3 percent).

Building construction grew by 0.6 percent in the euro area and by 0.7 percent in the EU28, after a drop of 0.7 percent and 1 percent respectively in November 2013. Civil engineering rose by 3.8 percent in the euro area and 3.5 percent in the EU28, after growth of 1.1 percent and a drop of 0.7 percent respectively in the previous month.

Compared with December 2012, production in construction fell in five member states and rose in ten. The largest decreases were registered in Portugal (down 14.1 percent), Italy (down 8.8 percent) and Spain (down 4.7 percent), and the highest increases in Hungary (up 11.5 percent), Slovakia (up 9.2 percent) and the United Kingdom (up 6.8 percent).

Building construction dropped by 0.9 percent in the euro area, but increased 0.1 percent in the EU28, after a drop of 1.3 percent and 0.8 percent respectively in November 2013. Civil engineering rose by 1.7 percent in the euro area and by 2.3 percent in the EU28, after a drop of 2.6 percent and 3.7 percent respectively in the previous month.
