European Construction Production Up in October

Production in the construction sector grew by 1.3 percent in EA18 and 0.4 percent in EU28.

Compared with September, October seasonally adjusted production in the construction sector grew by 1.3 percent in the euro area (EA18) and by 0.4 percent in the EU28, according to first estimates from Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union. In September, production in construction fell by 1 percent and 0.3 percent, respectively.

Compared with October 2013, production in construction grew by 1.4 percent in the euro area and by 1.5 percent in the EU28.

The increase of 1.3 percent in production in construction in the euro area in October, compared with September, is due to building construction rising by 1.4 percent and civil engineering by 0.3 percent. In the EU28, the increase of 0.4 percent is due to building construction rising by 0.4 percent and civil engineering by 0.2 percent.

Among Member States for which data are available, the highest increases in production in construction were registered in Hungary (+4 percent), Italy (+3.2 percent), and the Netherlands (+2.2 percent), and the largest decreases in Romania (-6.1 percent) and the United Kingdom (-2.2 percent).

The increase of 1.4 percent in production in construction in the euro area in October 2014, compared with October 2013, is due to building construction rising by 1.8 percent, while civil engineering fell by 0.4 percent. In the EU28, the increase of 1.5 percent is due to building construction rising by 2.3 percent, while civil engineering fell by 1.5 percent.

Among Member States for which data are available, the highest increases in production in construction were registered in Hungary (+15.8 percent), Spain (+13.9 percent) and Sweden (+10.5 percent), and the largest decreases in Romania (-11.3 percent), Portugal (-5.7 percent), Italy (-4.3 percent) and Slovakia (-4.2 percent).
