July Construction Production Flat in Europe

Year-over-year, production in construction increased by 0.4 percent in the euro area and by 0.6 percent in the EU28.

Compared with June 2014, seasonally adjusted production in the construction sector remained stable in July in both the euro area2 (EA18) and the EU282, according to first estimates from Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union. In June 2014, production in construction fell by 0.4 percent and 0.1 percent respectively.

Production in construction increased by 0.4 percent in the euro area and by 0.6 percent in the EU28 compared to the same period one year ago.

Production in construction remained stable in the euro area in July 2014, compared with June 2014, as building construction rose by 0.4 percent, while civil engineering fell by 2.1 percent.

In the EU28, production in construction also remained stable as building construction increased by 0.2 percent, while civil engineering dropped by 1 percent.

The highest increases in production in construction were observed in Hungary (+3.9 percent), Germany (+1.7 percent), Spain and Sweden (both +1 percent), and the largest decreases in the Czech Republic (-3.1 percent), Slovenia (-2.1 percent), France (-1.5 percent) and Poland (-1 percent).

The increase of 0.4 percent in production in construction in the euro area in July 2014 compared with July 2013 is due to building construction rising by 0.8 percent, while civil engineering fell by 2 percent.

In the EU28, the increase of 0.6 percent is due to building construction rising by 1 percent, while civil engineering fell by 1.9 percent.

The highest increases in production in construction were registered in Slovenia (+24.8 percent), Hungary (+17.5 percent) and Spain (+11.6 percent), and the largest decreases in Romania (-19.7 percent), Portugal (-8.8 percent) and Slovakia (-6.1 percent).
