New Orders for Manufactured Goods Down 1.7% in February

Decrease follows 1.2 percent increase in January.

New orders for manufactured goods in February, down following two three of the last four months, decreased 1.7 percent to $454 billion, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. This followed a 1.2 percent January increase.

Shipments, down 10 of the last 11 months, decreased 0.7 percent to $462.8 billion. This followed a 0.2 percent January decrease.

Unfilled orders, down following two of the last three months, decreased 0.3 percent to $1,184 billion. This followed a 0.1 percent January increase. The unfilled orders-to-shipments ratio was 72, up from 6.85 in January.

Inventories, down eight consecutive months, decreased 0.4 percent to $634.3 billion. This followed a 0.5 percent January decrease. The inventories-to-shipments ratio was 1.37, unchanged from January.

New orders for manufactured durable goods in February, down three of the last four months, decreased 3 percent to $229.1 billion, down from the previously published 2.8 percent decrease. This followed a 4.3 percent January increase.

Transportation equipment, also down three of the last four months, led the decrease, 6.2 percent to $74.1 billion. New orders for manufactured nondurable goods decreased 0.4 percent to $224.8 billion.

Shipments of manufactured durable goods in February, down two of the last three months, decreased 1 percent to $238 billion, down from the previously published 0.9 percent decrease. This followed a 1.4 percent January increase.

Transportation equipment, also down two of the last three months, led the decrease, 1.2 percent to $78.9 billion.

Shipments of manufactured nondurable goods, down eight consecutive months, decreased 0.4 percent to $224.8 billion. This followed a 1.9 percent January decrease. Petroleum and coal products, also down eight consecutive months, led the decrease, 1.6 percent to $34.8 billion.

Unfilled orders for manufactured durable goods in February, down two of the last three months, decreased 0.3 percent to $1,184 billion, up from the previously published 0.4 percent decrease. This followed a 0.1 percent January increase.

Transportation equipment, down three consecutive months, drove the decrease, 0.6 percent to $789.2 billion.

Inventories of manufactured durable goods in February, down seven of the last eight months, decreased $1.3 billion or 0.3 percent to $394.1 billion, virtually unchanged from the previously published decrease. This followed a 0.2 percent January decrease.
