New Orders for Manufactured Goods Fall 1% in May

Transportation equipment led the decline, falling 5.7 percent.

New orders for manufactured goods decreased 1 percent to $455.2 billion in May, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. This followed a 1.8 percent April increase. Transportation equipment led the decrease, down 5.7 percent to $81.8 billion. New orders for manufactured nondurable goods increased 0.3 percent to $224.9 billion.

New orders for manufactured durable goods in May decreased 2.3 percent to $230.4 billion, down from the previously published 2.2 percent decrease. This followed a 3.2 percent April increase.

Shipments of manufactured durable goods in May decreased 0.2 percent to $231.6 billion, virtually unchanged from the previously published decrease. This followed a 0.4 percent April increase. Transportation equipment led the decrease, falling 0.4 percent to $80 billion. Shipments of manufactured nondurable goods increased 0.3 percent to $224.9 billion. This followed a 0.4 percent April increase. Petroleum and coal products led the increase, climbing 2.1 percent to $34.7 billion.

Unfilled orders for manufactured durable goods in May increased 0.2 percent to $1,138.9 billion. This followed a 0.6 percent April increase. Transportation equipment drove the increase, up 0.2 percent to $785 billion.

Inventories of manufactured durable goods in May decreased 0.3 percent to $382.6 billion. Machinery led the decrease, down 0.8 percent to $65.4 billion. Inventories of manufactured nondurable goods increased 0.1 percent to $237.1 billion. Chemical products drove the increase, up 0.7 percent to $80.9 billion.

By stage of fabrication, May materials and supplies decreased 0.2 percent in durable goods and increased 0.2 percent in nondurable goods. Work in process increased 0.1 percent in durable goods and increased 1.9 percent in nondurable goods. Finished goods decreased 0.8 percent in durable goods and decreased 0.7 percent in nondurable goods.
