June Construction Production Stable in Europe

Production in the construction sector stable in EA19 and down 0.3 percent in EU28.

Compared with May, June seasonally adjusted production in the construction sector was stable in the euro area (EA19) and down 0.3 percent in the EU28, according to first estimates from Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union. In May 2016, production in construction was stable in the euro area, while it fell by 0.4 percent in the EU28.

In June 2016 compared with June 2015, production in construction grew by 0.6 percent in the euro area and fell by 0.6 percent in the EU28.

The stable production in construction in the euro area in June 2016, compared with May 2016, is due to civil engineering rising by 1.2 percent, while building construction fell by 0.2 percent.

In the EU28, the decrease of 0.3 percent is due to building construction falling by 0.5 percent, while civil engineering grew by 0.2 percent.

Among member states for which data are available, the highest increases in production in construction were recorded in Hungary (+7.6 percent), Slovenia (+2.3 percent) and Slovakia (+1.7 percent), and the largest decreases in the Czech Republic (-3.9 percent), Poland (-3.7 percent) and Bulgaria (-1.6 percent).

The increase of 0.6 percent in production in construction in the euro area in June 2016, compared with June 2015, is due to civil engineering rising by 1.5 percent and building construction by 0.3 percent. In the EU28, the decrease of 0.6 percent is due to civil engineering falling by 3.6 percent and building construction by 0.1 percent.

Among member states for which data are available, increases in production in construction were recorded in Sweden (+16.3 percent), Spain (+6.9 percent), Romania (+4.6 percent) and the Netherlands (+2.8 percent), while the largest decreases were observed in Hungary (-16.2 percent), Slovenia (-16 percent) and Poland (-14.7 percent).
