September Construction Production Down in Europe

Production in the construction sector down 0.9 percent in EA19, 0.3 percent in EU28.

Compared with August, September seasonally adjusted production in the construction sector was down 0.9 percent in the euro area (EA19) and 0.3 percent in the EU28, according to first estimates from Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union. In August 2016, production in construction rose by 0.1 percent in the euro area and fell by 0.6 in the EU28.

In September 2016 compared with September 2015, production in construction rose by 1.8 percent in the euro area, while it fell by 0.2 percent in the EU28.

The decrease of 0.9 percent in production in construction in the euro area in September 2016, compared with August 2016, is due to building construction falling by 1.1 percent, while civil engineering rose by 0.4 percent.

In the EU28, the decrease of 0.3 percent is due to building construction falling by 0.7 percent, while civil engineering rose by 1.8 percent.

Among Member States for which data are available, the largest decreases in production in construction were recorded in Italy (-3.9 percent), Slovakia (-3.1 percent) and Portugal (-2.2 percent), and the highest increases in Slovenia (+4 percent), Poland (+3.3 percent) and Sweden (+3.1 percent)

The increase of 1.8 percent in production in construction in the euro area in September 2016, compared with September 2015, is due to civil engineering rising by 3.7 percent and building construction by 1.3 percent.

In the EU28, the decrease of 0.2 percent is due to civil engineering falling by 1.6 percent, while building construction grew by 0.2 percent.

Among Member States for which data are available, the highest increases in production in construction were recorded in the Netherlands (+7.8 percent), Sweden (+6.1 percent) and Spain (+3.9 percent), and the largest decreases in Slovakia (-17.9 percent), Poland (-16.1 percent) and Hungary (-13.2 percent).
