March Construction Production Rises in Europe

Production in the construction sector rose by 0.8 percent in EA19 and 1.5 percent in EU28.

Compared with February 2015, March seasonally adjusted production in the construction sector rose by 0.8 percent in the euro area (EA19) and by 1.5 percent in the EU28, according to Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union.

Compared with March 2014, production in construction fell by 2.7 percent in the euro area and by 1.3 percent in the EU28.

Compared with February, March's increase of 0.8 percent in production in construction in the euro area is due to building construction rising by 0.3 percent and civil engineering by 3.2 percent. In the EU28, the increase of 1.5 percent is due to building construction rising by 1.1 percent and civil engineering by 3.1 percent.

Among Member States for which data are available, the highest increases in production in construction were observed in Hungary (+6.3 percent), Romania (+4.4 percent) and the United Kingdom (+3.8 percent). Decreases were recorded in Spain (-1.4 percent) and Bulgaria (-0.7 percent).

The year-over-year decrease of 2.7 percent in production in construction in the euro area in March 2015 is due to building construction falling by 4 percent, while civil engineering rose by 2.5 percent. In the EU28, the decrease of 1.3 percent is due to building construction falling by 2.7 percent, while civil engineering rose by 4.7 percent.

Among Member States for which data are available, the largest decreases in production in construction were registered in Spain (-8 percent), France (-5.3 percent) and Slovenia (-4 percent), and the highest increases in Romania (+13.3 percent), Hungary (+12.7 percent) and the Netherlands (+11.5 percent).
