Huttig Building Products, St. Louis, MO, reported second-quarter sales of $148.9 million, a year-over-year increase of 8 percent. Profit was $2.6 million, compared with $1.6 million for the same period a year ago.
Sales increased in all product categories from 2012. Millwork sales increased 15 percent to $70.9 million. Building products sales, which were negatively impacted by a decline in storm driven roofing sales, increased 1 percent to $61.5 million. Wood product sales increased 9 percent to $16.5 million.
"Our sales depend heavily on the strength of local and national new residential construction, home improvement and remodeling markets," the company said in its quarterly SEC filing. "While macro-economic conditions within the new residential construction market have improved modestly over the last several years, housing starts remain well below historical levels. As such, we expect the downturn in new residential construction to continue to adversely affect our operating results throughout 2013."
For the six months ended June 30, sales were $273.4 million, up 7.5 percent year over year. Profit was $600,000, compared to a year-ago loss of $1.3 million.
