Phoenix, AZ-based Avnet, Inc. (NYSE: AVT), No. 1 on MDM's list of top electronics distributors, has agreed to acquire Universal Semiconductor Inc., Fort Lauderdale, FL. USI is a distributor of discrete semiconductor, passive and electromechanical components to military and aerospace customers.

USI services OEM business partners and provides same-day shipping and same-day tape and reeling. The transaction is expected to close by mid-January and will be integrated into Avnet Electronics Marketing, Americas.
“This acquisition is of strategic importance as it enhances our competitive position in the higher value defense and aerospace segment,” said Ed Smith, president Avnet Electronics Marketing, Americas.
USI has 58 employees across five offices in the U.S. and one in Denmark. The company had sales of $70 million in 2011.
