Privately-owned housing starts in August were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 750,000. This is 2.3 percent above July and 29.1 percent above August 2011, according to the U.S. Census Bureau and the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Single-family housing starts in August were at a rate of 535,000, 5.5 percent above July. The August rate for units in buildings with five units or more was 208,000.
Privately owned housing units authorized by building permits in August were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 803,000, 1 percent below July but 24.5 percent above August 2011.
Single-family authorizations in August were at a rate of 512,000, 0.2 percent above July. Authorizations of units in buildings with five units or more were at a rate of 263,000 in August.
Privately-owned housing completions in August were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 689,000. This is 0.7 percent above July and 11.7 percent above August 2011.
Single-family housing completions in August were at a rate of 489,000, 5.4 percent above July. The August rate for units in buildings with five units or more was 193,000.
