The challenge of getting young people into manufacturing and distribution is one we've talked about frequently here at mdm.com. And through all those conversations, there's a common message that comes from those already in the industry: If you sell it, they will come.

"It just is an industry that is always motivating and always changing," says Barb Ross, manager of sales and marketing for Timken Drives. Ross was recently featured in the 7 Minutes With… segment of MDM Executive Briefing.

After nearly 30 years in the industry, Ross says she can still pinpoint the lessons she's learned from holding different positions. "I found it always to be something different," she says. "… And this has always kept me challenged and interested."

To that end, Ross, the 2012 winner of the Power Transmission Distributors Association's Warren Pike Award, says the industry needs to do a better job of making people aware of the breadth of opportunities that exist, from different sectors to different skill development opportunities.

"We need to make sure we have young, talented people who will continue to support the growth of this industry," Ross says.
