Chicago, IL-based Grainger reported daily sales for the month of February 2010 increased 12 percent versus February 2009. Results for the month included a 5 percentage point positive contribution from acquisitions, a 1 percentage point benefit from the sales of seasonal products and 2 percentage point contribution from foreign exchange. Excluding acquisitions, seasonal sales and foreign exchange, daily sales for the company increased 4 percent. More…

Noland Company has opened a new location in Cape Coral, FL, to serve commercial and residential contractors. The move is a bid to broaden its reach with private brand NuTone Heating and Cooling Products in the Florida market. It’s the second HVAC company Noland has opened on Florida’s west coast since December when the Pinellas Park location in the Clearwater area began operation. Reid Supply Company, a Muskegon, MI-based distributor of industrial supplies recently announced it had added more than 8,000 items to its Web site in response to the “government’s need for a multipurpose convenience point for builders of rail systems, roads and bridges.” More…

Graybar, St. Louis, MO, reported sales for 2009 were $4.38 billion, down 18.9 percent compared to 2008. Profit declined 57.3 percent to $37.4 million. Swiss fasteners distributor Bossard Group reported sales for 2009 were CHF 395.1 million (US$369.5 million), down 30.2 percent from 2008. In local currencies, sales were down 28.6 percent. Profit declined 52.8 percent to CHF 15.3 million (US$14.3 million). More…

Actuant Corp., Milwaukee, WI, reported sales for the second quarter were generally flat compared to the same period a year ago at $294 million. Core sales declined 3 percent. Profit more than doubled to $7.15 million. For the first six months, sales were $599.4 million, down 9.8 percent from the prior year period. Year-to-date core sales declined 13 percent. A. M. Castle & Co., Franklin Park, IL, reported sales for 2009 were $812.6 million, a decline of 45.9 percent from record sales in 2008. Net loss for the full year was $26.9 million, compared to the year-ago net loss of $17.1 million. For the fourth quarter 2009, sales were $181.3 million, down 43.6 percent from fourth quarter 2008. Illinois Tool Works Inc., Glenview, IL, reported operating revenue increase of 10 percent for the three months ended Feb. 28, 2010, versus the year-ago period. The recovery in the U.S. domestic manufacturing sector currently under way is stronger than the recovery in the general economy, largely due to industry taking the brunt of the decline in the downturn, according to the Manufacturers Alliance/MAPI U.S. Industrial Outlook. Manufacturing industrial production, measured on a quarter-to-quarter basis, grew at nearly a 6 percent annual rate in the fourth quarter of 2009 following healthy 8 percent growth in the third quarter. Production in non-high-tech manufacturing expanded at a 5 percent annual rate in the fourth quarter. More…
