Builders FirstSource, Inc. (Nasdaq: BLDR), Dallas, TX, reported sales for the first quarter were $162.8 million, an increase of 1 percent over the same period a year ago. The supplier and manufacturer of structural and related building products for residential new construction recorded a loss for the period of $21.2 million, compared to a year-ago loss of $31.4 million.

Sales increased despite single-family housing starts being 20 percent below the comparable period a year ago, according to CEO Floyd Sherman.
\”We believe our improved sales performance despite the difficult macro-economic environment was due to our strong competitive position and competitors exiting our markets, and is indicative of market share gains over this time period,\” Sherman said.
