Fastener Prices Jump More Than 30%
Product DetailsThree years ago U.S. distributors bought 51.3% of their fastener products from North American manufacturers, according to the End of 2003 FIN Survey by the newsletter, Fastener Industry News (FastenerNews.com). That number today is 37.9%. Combined Asian sources now total a majority of the supply (50.9%) sold by domestic distributors. Taiwan gained slightly to 29.6%, up 1% over three years. China nearly doubled its share from 8.3% in 2000 to supplying 16.2% in 2003.
One importer reported paying 28.2% more for ﾽ' x 1 ﾼ' zinc hex bolts this month compared with July 2003. A ﾾ' x 7-inch bolt used in strong ties for construction has risen 41.7% from October to February.
