Construction Markets and Materials Forecast (20 minutes)
Ken Simonson, Chief Economist of the Associated General Contractors of America, shares his insight into current conditions in construction end-markets. He addresses trends in residential and nonresidential markets and what they mean as we move into the first quarter of 2011.
Manufacturing End-Market Forecast (20 minutes)
Don Norman, economist at the Manufacturers Alliance/MAPI, will review how the economic recovery has proceeded to date and provide MAPI’s latest forecast for economic growth and for the manufacturing sector in 2011.
Profitability Action Steps for 2011 (20 minutes)
Al Bates of Profit Planning Group provides practical tips for using forecast and benchmark data for your 2011 planning. He will review the impact of the economic downturn on profitability; identify what distributors did to offset the economic challenges of the past few years; distinguish typical from high-profit results; and suggest some guidelines for financial prudence in the future.
Q&A (30 minutes)
During the live event, you will have the opportunity to ask questions of the panelists. MDM will also send out a survey before the event to gather questions to pose to the panelists at this time.
About the Speakers
Al Bates is chairman of Boulder, CO-based Profit Planning Group. Profit Planning Group provides four critical services to distributors: industry-wide profitability studies providing profit and operational benchmarks to participants; compensation studies; tailored educational programs; and profit improvement reports, provided free to Profitability Study clients.
Don Norman is an economist at the Manufacturers Alliance/MAPI. In addition to writing on economic and energy issues and coordinating the quarterly Business Outlook Survey, he is the Director of MAPI’s CFO and Financial Councils. Previously he was a Research Manager at the American Petroleum Institute and a staff economist at the Federal Trade Commission. He received his B.A. and Ph.D from UCLA and an M.B.A. from George Mason University.
Ken Simonson joined the Associated General Contractors of America as chief economist on Sept. 10, 2001. Ken has 35 years of experience analyzing, advocating and communicating about economic and tax issues. Before joining AGC, he was senior economic advisor in the U.S. Small Business Administration’s Office of Advocacy. Ken is a board member of the National Tax Association and chairs a new Real Estate/Construction Roundtable for the National Association for Business Economics. Ken has a BA in economics from the University of Chicago, an MA in economics from Northwestern University, and has taken advanced graduate economics courses at the Université de Paris, Johns Hopkins and Georgetown Universities.
