Europe Construction Production Falls in November

Compared with October, November production in the construction sector fell by 0.6 percent in the euro area and by 1.1 percent in the EU28.

Compared with October 2013, November 2013 seasonally adjusted production in the construction sector fell by 0.6 percent in the euro area (EA17) and by 1.1 percent in the EU28, according to Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union. In October 2013, production in construction decreased by 1.1 percent and 0.3 percent respectively.

Year-over-year, November production in construction declined by 1.7 percent in the euro area and by 1.6 percent in the EU28.

Compared with October 2013, among the member states for which data are available for November 2013, production in construction fell in seven and rose in eight. The largest decreases were observed in the Czech Republic (-5.6 percent), Romania (-4.9 percent) and the United Kingdom (-4 percent), and the highest increases in Slovenia (+9.6 percent), Poland (+3.9 percent) and Hungary (+3 percent).

Building construction fell by 1.1 percent in the euro area and by 1.4 percent in the EU28, after -0.6 percent and -0.3 percent respectively in October 2013. Civil engineering rose by 1 percent in the euro area, but decreased by 0.3 percent in the EU28, after -1.6 percent and +0.8 percent respectively in the previous month.

Compared with November 2012, production in construction fell in nine member states, remained stable in Germany and rose in five. The largest decreases were registered in Portugal (-13 percent), Italy (-10.8 percent), Bulgaria (-9.1 percent) and the Czech Republic (-8.3 percent), and the highest increases in Slovenia (+30.7 percent), Hungary (+18.9 percent) and Sweden (+5.9 percent).

Building construction dropped by 1.4 percent in both the euro area and the EU28, after -2 percent and -0.7 percent respectively in October 2013. Civil engineering fell by 3.1 percent in the euro area and by 3.2 percent in the EU28, after -3.9 percent and -2.6 percent respectively in the previous month.
