Construction spending in July was an estimated $834.4 billion, 0.9 percent below the revised June estimate of $842.2 billion, according to The U.S. Census Bureau of the Department of Commerce. The July figure is 9.3 percent above the July 2011 estimate of $763.5 billion.

For the first seven months of 2012, construction spending was $464.4 billion, 9.3 percent above the first seven months of 2011.
Spending on private construction was $558.7 billion, 1.2 percent below the June estimate. Residential construction was $264.6 billion in July, a 1.6 percent month-to-month drop. Nonresidential construction was $294.1 billion, 0.9 percent below June numbers.
Public construction spending was $275.7 billion in July, 0.4 percent below June. Educational construction was $66 billion, 0.6 percent below the prior month. Highway construction was $81.2 billion, slightly below spending in June.
