Atlanta, GA-based Genuine Parts Co. (NYSE: GPC) reported sales for the third quarter of $3.4 billion, an increase of 3 percent over the same period a year ago. Profit increased 14 percent to $172.9 million.

For the first nine months, sales were $9.9 billion, a like-for-like increase of 5 percent. Profit increased 13 percent to $487.8 million.
Sales for the industrial group, Motion Industries, were $1.1 billion for the quarter, an increase of 4.5 percent over the prior-year period. Motion is No. 6 on MDM’s list of the Top 40 Industrial Distributors. For the first nine months, sales were $3.4 billion, a year-over-year increase of 8.2 percent.
Sales for the electrical group, EIS, were $150.9 million, an increase of 5 percent over the prior-year period. For the first nine months, sales increased 6.5 percent to $447.4 million.
S. P. Richards, Genuine Parts Company’s office products group, showed a 1 percent sales decrease for the quarter, falling to $444.3 million. Nine-month sales fell slightly to $1.3 billion.
Automotive group sales increased 2.5 percent to $1.7 billion. For the first nine months, sales were $4.8 billion, 4.1 percent higher than prior-year levels.
