Rehiring Trends May Be Different This Time Around

The conventional wisdom after past recessions has been that an increase in temporary hiring would soon-after lead to more permanent hiring. But as with so many things about this recession, hiring patterns this time around may be different, according to some economists and hiring experts.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, temporary help services added 52,000 jobs in January, the fourth consecutive increase. But gains in overall employment have not materialized as they have in previous recessions, remaining essentially flat in January.

In fact, employment in construction and in transportation and warehousing continued to fall, cutting 75,000 and 23,000 jobs respectively. Manufacturing employment stabilized some in January, adding 11,000 jobs.

That doesn't mean that permanent jobs won't follow, just that they might take a little longer to materialize because of the uncertainty surrounding what this recovery will look like. Companies "don't want to hire permanent workers and then have to turn around and get rid of them six months later," Chris DeCapua, owner of Dawson Careers, Columbus, OH, told the Associated Press.
