In 2009 and 2010, MAPI economists provided "10 Talking Points About Manufacturing" to help executives discuss the state of manufacturing during the recession. This year, the talking points have taken on a decidedly different tone, reflecting a brighter economic picture.

"U.S. manufacturers have shown remarkable strength and are now leading the U.S. recovery," writes Thomas J. Duesterberg, senior adviser and former president and CEO of the Manufacturers Alliance/MAPI. And this year's talking points help make that case.

A few of the key points:

While the U.S. fell to No. 2 in global manufacturing production, it is still double Japan, triple Germany and almost 10 times that of India.

In 2010, the U.S. had a trade surplus in eight subsectors, including aerospace, material handling equipment, industrial machinery and construction equipment.

The productivity of Chinese manufacturing workers is only 12 percent that of their American counterparts. Among the more advanced nations, only Finland and Taiwan have shown greater labor productivity growth in manufacturing than the U.S. since 1979, and only by small margins.
