The Institute for Supply Management released its monthly manufacturing Purchasing Managers Index (PMI) on Sept. 2, reflecting August U.S. industrial activity, which showed an acceleration after a July slowdown.
The PMI — regarded as a key of U.S. industrial health — improved 0.7 percentage points to a reading of 48.7% following a one-point slide in July. Even so, it marked the sixth straight month that the PMI was in contraction territory (anything below 50.0%) after a brief expansion in January-February preceded by 26 straight months of contraction.

The August figure was slightly below expectations of 49.0% forecasted by economists polled by major news outlets.

More granularly, the latest report showed that output revealed mixed results in August, with the PMI’s subindex for new orders up 4.3 points to 51.4%, more than offsetting a 3.6-point slide for production to 47.8%. Employment, supplier deliveries, inventories and new export orders each increased month-to-month, while customer inventories, prices, backlog of orders and imports each declined.

Two of the six largest manufacturing industries (food, beverage & tobacco products; petroleum & coal) expanded in August, compared to none in July.
Of the 17 manufacturing industries the PMI reflects, seven reported growth (same as July), led in the by the order of textile mills; apparel, leather & allied products; nonmetallic minerals; food, beverage & tobacco; petroleum & coal; miscellaneous manufacturing; and primary metals. The 10 industries reporting contraction were led by paper products and wood products with the biggest declines.
