On Oct. 1, the U.S. will levy 25% tariffs on imported heavy-duty trucks and a 100% tariff on pharmaceuticals, President Donald Trump announced on the Truth Social platform on Sept. 25.
Heavy-Duty Trucks
In what Trump characterized as a protection from “unfair outside competition,” he announced a 25% tariff on heavy-duty trucks imported into the U.S. from other parts of the world.
“Our Great Large Truck Company Manufacturers, such as Peterbilt, Kenworth, Freightliner, Mack Trucks, and others, will be protected from the onslaught of outside interruptions. We need our Truckers to be financially healthy and strong, for many reasons, but above all else, for National Security purposes!” Trump wrote.
In response, major truck manufacturers International Motors, Daimler Truck North America and Volvo Group told the Commercial Carrier Journal on Sept. 26 that the OEMs are “in a holding pattern” as they await more details. Read the OEMs’ responses on CCJ.
Pharmaceutical Products
Any “branded or patented” pharmaceutical products will be subject to an 100% import, according to Trump. Those companies which are “breaking ground” on or currently constructing manufacturing facilities “in America” (assumes the U.S.), will be expect from the tariff, according to the post.
Certain Home Improvement, Interior Furnishing Products
In a third Truth Social post, Trump also called for a 50% tariff on kitchen cabinets, bathroom vanities and associated products; and a 30% tariff on upholstered furniture imported into the U.S.
