July Construction Production Increases in Europe

Production in the construction sector up 0.2 percent in EA19 and 0.3 percent in EU28.

Compared with June, July seasonally adjusted production in the construction sector was up 0.2 percent in the euro area (EA19) and 0.5 percent in the EU28, according to first estimates from Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union. In June, production in construction was up 0.2 percent in the euro area and up 0.3 percent in the EU28.

 In July 2017 compared with July 2016, production in construction increased by 3.4 percent in the euro area and by 3.6 percent in the EU28.

The increase of 0.2 percent in production in construction in the euro area in July 2017, compared with June 2017, is due to building construction rising by 0.3 percent, while civil engineering fell by 0.4 percent. In the EU28, the increase of 0.5 percent is due to building construction rising by 0.8 percent, while civil engineering fell by 0.8 percent. Among Member States for which data are available, the highest increases in production in construction were recorded in Sweden (+7.9 percent), Poland (+4.3 percent) and Slovakia (+2.8 percent), and the largest decreases in Slovenia (-8.6 percent), the Czech Republic (-2.5 percent) and Hungary (-2.1 percent).

The increase of 3.4 percent in production in construction in the euro area in July 2017, compared with July 2016, is due to building construction rising by 4 percent and civil engineering by 0.9 percent. In the EU28, the increase of 3.6 percent is due to building construction rising by 4 percent and civil engineering by 2.3 percent. Among Member States for which data are available, the highest increases in production in construction were recorded in Hungary (+22.6 percent), Sweden (+21.2 percent), Poland (+19.8 percent) and Slovakia (+14.7 percent). Decreases were observed in the United Kingdom (-1.1 percent) and Italy (-0.4 percent)
