On June 5, grocery wholesale distributor United Natural Foods Inc. (UNFI) became aware of a cyberattack and took certain systems offline to contain it, an action which temporarily impacted the distribution and fulfillment of customer orders.
The incident continues to cause disruptions to business operations, though the company has implemented workarounds for certain operations in order to continue servicing its customers where possible, UNFI wrote in a June 9 filing with U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

The cyberattack has drawn the attention of some local and national media, including Tech Crunch, as the Providence, RI-based company is a primary distributor to Whole Foods.
In an UNFI Systems Update posted on the company’s website on June 9, the company wrote: “We have identified unauthorized activity in our systems and have proactively taken some systems offline while we investigate. As soon as we discovered the activity, an investigation was initiated with the help of leading forensics experts and we have notified law enforcement. We are assessing the unauthorized activity and working to restore our systems to safely bring them back online. As we work through this issue, our customers, suppliers, and associates are our highest priority. We are working closely with them to minimize disruption as much as possible.”
The scope of the cyberattack is still under investigation.
