For the second time this year, news has surfaced about a pending U.S. factory closing plan from bearings and industrial motion products maker Timken.

Pittsburg, Kansas-based local news station KOAM reported Nov. 30 that Timken told the station that the company notified employees that it plans to slowly shutter its belting facility in Fort Scott, Kansas, eventually closing the plant in 2025.

The factory is one of two Timken Belts factories and employs 155 people, according to KOAM, with the other plant in Springfield, Missouri. The company told KOAM that most of its belts are produced at the Springfield facility.

“While difficult, we’re making this change to streamline our operations and restructure our manufacturing footprint to better compete in a global market,” Timken Corporate Communications Manager Scott Schroeder told KOAM.

The news station added that Schroeder said the company will provide support for those Fort Scott employees impacted by the gradual shutdown, including on-site counseling, benefits planning and and retention and severance pay.

Back in January of this year, Timken (via Schroeder) told a South Carolina local news station that the company would close its bearings plant in Gaffney, South Carolina by the end of 2023, impacting 225 employees.
