This article, based on interviews with distributors and manufacturers and the 2012 MDM Reader Survey, outlines and analyzes key trends and issues affecting how distributors will do business in 2013.

The year 2012 was marked by uncertainty. It’s a word we heard over and over again as we approached the presidential election in November. But despite that uncertainty, we saw movement in several areas this year. Mergers and acquisition activity picked up significantly in wholesale distribution, and technology was a key driver of many of the top trends going into 2013.

More than half of U.S. counties have been designated as natural disaster areas after the worst drought in more than 50 years ravaged crops and pastures this summer. As of Aug. 28, 2012, nearly 53 percent of the country was still in moderate drought or worse, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor, released weekly by the National Drought Mitigation Center at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Manufacturers and distributors serving these markets will or already have seen an impact as the drought continues to dampen economic activity.

MDM spoke with industrial rubber products distributor Lewis-Goetz and Company CEO Jeffrey Crane at the National Association of Wholesaler-Distributors annual meeting in January. Lewis-Goetz, Pittsburgh, PA, remained active on the acquisition front throughout the recession, and plans to continue consolidation in its fragmented distribution sector in the next year.
