A recent article from the Wall Street Journal highlighted the practice of "reverse mentoring." In the article, Lois Zachary, president of Leadership Development Services LLC, a Phoenix-based consulting firm that helps companies implement mentoring programs, says older executives sometimes need help catching up with the quickly changing technology environment.
It also benefits the younger workers. They develop a stronger sense of loyalty when they feel they're contributing to the growth of the company.
Not everyone is excited about the prospect, though. From the WSJ article: "Many older workers bristle at the idea of being mentored by someone younger, especially since they usually have many more years of career experience, says Sanghamitra Chaudhuri, a senior lecturer at Ohio State University who recently co-wrote a research report on the topic."
And for some higher-ups, it's sometimes difficult to admit they just don't know something. But success in today's business world requires a shift in mindset.
As one commenter on the WSJ article wrote: "If people don't start learning from each other, regardless of age, the business world is going to have a huge gap in knowledge."
