U.S. Construction Spending Fell 0.3% During May; 3rd Straight Decline

Construction spending declined in May, driven by continued softness in both residential and nonresidential private construction.

Total U.S. construction spending declined in May for the third consecutive month, according to figures shared on July 1 by the U.S. Census Bureau.

Spending in May was estimated at a seasonally adjusted rate of $2.138 trillion, 0.3% below the revised April estimate of $2.145 trillion and 3.5% below the May 2024 estimate.

Private Construction

May spending on private construction was at a seasonally-adjusted rate of $1.626 trillion, 0.5% below the revised April estimate. Residential construction was at a rate of $888.9 billion, 0.5% below the revised April estimate of $893.7 billion, while nonresidential construction’s rate of $737.7 billion was 0.4% below the revised April estimate.

Public Construction

May spending on public construction was at a seasonally-adjusted annual rate of $511.6 billion, 0.1% above the revised April estimate. Educational construction was at a rate of $111.8 billion, 0.2% above the revised April estimate, while highway construction’s rate of $143.2 billion was 0.3% below the revised April estimate.
